After many years of absence, the national 1/8 on road section returned to life in Saint Anne’s Park! The event was hosted by ORCA Ireland, the club who have long been involved in on road racing in Ireland.
Two classes competing on the day were the insanely fast 1/8 GP nitro and the newest and very popular 1/8 GT nitro. These GT cars are based off of 1/8 buggy chassis converted for on road use, ditching the mid differential for a two speed gearbox along with shorter suspension to reduce the centre of gravity. Saturday was an open practice day for both classes with the qualifying heats and finals held on Sunday 27th April.
Sunday morning saw beautiful sunshine giving a bone dry track the day and plenty of grip. Four rounds of qualifying (heats) were held for each class, this determined the racers starting position for the all important finals.
In GP, TQ shifted between Austin Elliott and Stephen O’Connor, with Austin securing pole position in the final heat. The final saw lots of mechanical problems for drivers, Stephen then took the lead early on he never looked back. He secured the top spot on the podium, Kyle O’Toole took second place and Graeme Lougheed third. Congratulations to Stephen!
In the 1/8 gt there were strong battles in qualifying with TQ also changing hands several times.
After the 4 heats, Bruno Barbosa and Jason Noonan had 2 heat wins each, but Jason took pole having the fastest time in heat 4. The 30 minute final had some great close racing through the field. The competitive nature of this class is the reason it has become so popular. After 30 minutes of racing Jason crossed the line in first place, Bruno Barbosa in second and Lee Kelly taking the final spot on the podium.
With the 2022 season underway, we look forward to three more national events at the Saint Anne’s track this year.
